Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to emerge. This generally happens between the ages of 17 and 25.

When they cause problems
Problems occur when there is not enough room in the jaw for wisdom teeth to come through without affecting the surrounding teeth — this is what is meant by impacted wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth can be partially impacted, which means only part of the tooth has emerged through the gum. Partially and fully impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain and swelling and can damage the adjacent teeth and their roots. A cyst may also form, which can in turn cause bone and tissue damage.
Wisdom teeth do not always cause problems, and not all problems are painful. Some people are unaware theirs are impacted, and it is not possible to predict if or when impacted wisdom teeth will cause trouble.
