Bad Breath Treatment

Happy middle aged couple together , with wife's arms around husband

We have all suffered bad breath at some point or another, particularly after a night out dining on foods such as garlic and onion; this is termed transient bad breath and is a short-term concern that can usually be masked with breath mints, gum and mouthwash until the foods responsible are out of our system.

Bad breath that is of greater concern has the clinical name of halitosis. This is a common ongoing problem that can cause great embarrassment both socially and professionally.

Fortunately, help is available. At Fresh Dentistry we can assess the likely cause of halitosis and prescribe the right treatment to resolve your situation.

Although bad breath can be attributed to a variety of causes, in most cases it is the result of a build-up of bacteria on your tongue, fillings that are broken down or have rough edges or bacteria under the gum-line. Some of these bacteria produce sulphur compounds which have an unpleasant odour.

A thorough examination will be the first step in halitosis treatment. This will involve a check-up, gum assessment and a scale and clean.

Replacement of rough or broken-down fillings combined with a thorough oral hygiene routine (i.e. brushing and flossing or Pikstering) with specific points of focus, is very effective in removing much of the odour-causing bacteria. Most people will see a significant improvement within a short amount of time.
